Application Information
Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to graduating secondary level students and those currently studying towards a first university degree or diploma in a Canadian post-secondary institution. For students in Quebec, you must be entering 2nd year cégep or university.
Award recipients must meet the following criteria:
- Involvement in voluntary humanitarian work.
- Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
- Undergraduates studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution in Canada.
- Maintain a satisfactory academic standing and continued involvement in voluntary humanitarian and community work.
Students are eligible to receive the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award until they have received their first university degree (for a maximum of four years), provided they have maintained a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award.
Value
The value of the award is $7,000 per year, paid directly to the institution in two installments of $3,500 each. For students who do not pay tuition fees, the award is $3,500 per year, paid directly to the institution in two installments of $1,750 each.
Recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award may not receive more than $15,000 in total scholarships. If a student's awards exceed this amount, any excess will be deducted from the student's Terry Fox Award. If a student's academic expenses are covered by another source, they may choose to decline acceptance of the financial portion of the award. They will still be granted the award and will still be considered Terry Fox Scholars.

Note: Application forms must be printed out and mailed along with supporting documents to the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program offices. They cannot be completed electronically (ie. e-mailed).
Application forms and accompanying documents must be post-marked by February 1st of each year. Forms received after that date will not be considered, nor will they be held over for the next year. Application material will not be returned to students.
Following the initial selection process shortlisted candidates will be selected for personal interviews by a committee. Interviews are typically held in April/May and take place in each province. Due to the high volume of applications received only the shortlisted candidates will be contacted to arrange an interview.
Selection Process
Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recipients are selected for their dedication to the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox, their volunteer experience, their courage in overcoming obstacles, their participation in sport, fitness and community service and their academic standing.
The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award is NOT a 'disability award,' nor is it granted solely on financial need. The field of study is open and at the discretion of the successful candidate.
Once all the application forms have been reviewed by the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program office, a Selection Committee will recommend deserving candidates to the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program's Board of Directors - professional individuals and TFHAP alumni from across the country - who will make the final determination regarding awards.
