Volunteer Experience
Volunteering is key to the receipt of a Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, but it is important to note that not all volunteer activities are considered equal with regard to this program.
In order to be considered for a Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to volunteering with a view toward helping those in need.
Some examples of volunteering by Terry Fox Scholars:
- Helping the elderly with chores or visiting them in a care facility;
- Helping and entertaining physically or mentally handicapped children/adults;
- Tutoring / Peer mentoring;
- Providing companionship and support to others;
- Helping out with family responsibilities;
- Fundraising, collecting food, clothes, household items, etc. for charity;
- Providing support and encouragement to patients in hospitals or at care facilities;
- Helping new Canadians adjust to life in Canada;
- Participating in school or community service clubs;
- Counselling / assisting 'at risk' youth.
